The area that is now Moraga was first inhabited by the Saklan Native Americans.  The Spanish and Mexican colonialist eventually took over and the town was named after Joaquin Moraga.  He was the grandson of Jose Joaquin Moraga, the builder of the Presidio of San Francisco and the founder of what eventually became San Jose.  Moraga gained township in November 1974.

In 2011, Greatschools.org named Moraga the best city to live and learn in.  The city is home to several elementary schools, a middle school and the private college of Saint Mary’s College of California.  In addition, the town works with the Acalanes Union High School District to send the students to the local high schools in both Moraga and Orinda.

While Moraga is a relatively small township, it does have the benefit of enjoying easy access to some great events and locations  in neighboring communities like the Lafayette Wine and Arts Festival, Blackhawk Food, Wine and Film Festival, and Lesher Center for Arts in Walnut Creek.
