Prior to garbage disposals, kitchens were havens for plumbing issues, trash backups, and water leaks. Nowadays, disposals are the filter for your pipes. They grind and take away food, chunky drinks, and other compostable items. Thus, homes have reduced the amount of trash and are more eco-friendly.
In order to keep your garbage disposal working optimally, you need to avoid putting certain items in and do regular cleaning. Some of the items to avoid putting in the disposal re the following:
- Grease
- Bones
- Large Fruit Seeds/Pits
- Egg Shells
- Coffee Grounds
- Rocks
- High Fiber Materials and Food
Cleaning Strategy involves the steps below:
Flush Out your Disposal with Water
This doesn’t involve just turning the water on. Use the drain plug to fill up the sink with hot water for a few inches. Once the water is filled, add some dish soap and mix it. You should then unplug it and let the water cleanse your system and free up any particles.
Add Ice and Salt
After flushing it, add ice and salt into your garbage disposal. This allows for the debris to be removed from the disposal’s inside cavity while also sharpening the blades. The general ratio is to have two cups of ice and one cup of salt. You should run water while you have the disposal running. This will be loud but it is perfectly normal.
Scrub Away
The last step in the process is to use a long brush to scrub the insides of your garbage disposal. Use the water and scrub to thoroughly clean the disposal’s insides and then rinse it.
By following these steps, your garbage disposal is clean. Should you have questions, contact Elias Land of Lands
